Sugary Drinks

(download)

Today the fourth grade students had their final nutrition lesson with WITS (wellness in the schools). Students calculated the amount of sugar in common beverages, then physically measured out the grams of sugar. **Ask your student what drink they investigated!

Meena and Michele also worked with the students on healthy and unhealthy fats. Students looked up the amount of fat in a McDonalds' quarter pounder with cheese. We used margarine to simulate the fat content in the burger. Everyone was shocked!

Finally, to demonstrate food with healthy fat, Meena prepared fresh hummus for all of the students. It was so yummy, there were several recipe requests (coming soon)!

1001 Inventions

3rd grade students took a trip to the 1001 Inventions exhibit at the New York Hall of Science. http://1001inventions.com/NewYork
The students learned that the "Dark Ages" were really the "golden age of invention" in the Muslim world. Many of these ancient inventions have influenced our modern world!

Sound Simulation

To help visualize that sound energy causes vibration, students were magically transformed into solid, liquid, and/or gas molecules. Ask your student to perform an experiment to prove that sound travels better through solid rather than gas.

Chicken Anatomy

P178

5th grade students observed the anatomy of chicken wings. The students looked for the muscles, bones, tendons and ligaments and observed how these parts worked together. Ask your student to show you their lab sheet (due 1/20).

Third grade students learned that all water that exists on Earth has been here in one form or another, since Earth's beginning! Students illustrated the different components of the water cycle. We will be combining all of these illustrations to create a grade level display!
