This week the 5th grade has been continuing the school-block tree identification unit. Each student had the opportunity to use the iPad app "Leaf Snap," to verify their tree's identification. If you have an iPad, Leaf Snap is a free download. Once you have the app, your student can sign into our class account to show you the samples from their street tree. Next time you drop your student at school, take a walk around the block. You will be so impressed with their ability to identify the trees using leaf shape, bark color and texture, and fruit.

This week in 4th grade, it's been all about non-Newtonian fluids. Today students in 4RJ made oobleck (a mixture of cornstarch and water). Ask your student to tell you about why oobleck is considered a non-Newtonian fluid!

This week 3M worked on several solutions to three design challenges:
A.Your new pet kitten is trapped in a ten-foot deep hole. You need a contraption to safely rescue your poor animal.
B.You are going on vacation for a month and can’t find anyone to water your plants while you’re gone. You need a device that will give your plants the right amount of water – not too much and not too little.
C.You like to read before you go to sleep, but you don’t have a bedside lamp. You need a way to turn off the light switch across the room without having to get out of bed.
Ask your student to telk you about which challenge they chose, and what their solution was.

Today in sciecne Ms. Rosenblum taught the 5th graders a lesson on the logistics of using an iPad at school.
On Tuesday, the the students will begin a project on identifying, mapping, and cataloging the trees on our school block. We will utilize an iPad app called Leaf Snap for some of our tree IDs. If you have an iPad or iPhone, check it out...it's a FREE app!
