Nature's Classroom Debrief

10/9/10
Ms. Kubat and I were so excited to hear about all the fun and crazy science adventures that took place at Nature's Classroom. We heard all about breaking geodes, licking slugs, eating lemon clovers, hiking, electrocuting a pickle, sparking altoids, and seeing a lot of constellations! The only negative comment the students had, was that it was too short!!!

From the Met to the High Line

10/9/10
Today the 3rd grade trip to the Met was cancelled. "Cloud City," the sculpture we were hoping to see is located in the roof garden, and due to the rain, it was closed. Hopefully we can reschedule. Instead, today we learned about the history of the High Line and began thinking of the High Line as an innovation. The class was really getting excited about coming up with innovations and inventions of their own!
Ask your student to tell you a out Westside Cowboys!

High Line History

10/4/12

4RJ and 4G will be taking trips this month to see the High Line, "New York's Park in the Sky!"  In preparation for the trip, each class learned about the history of the High Line.  Check out these video links:

Since 4RJ is going on their trip next week, the students studied the High Line beam bridge structure and experimented with modeling a beam bridge.

Mirrors and Reflection

10/2/12

Third grade students worked with mirrors, exploring the concept that light travels in straight lines.  The students also used the mirrors to complete several challenges.  Here is one of the challenges:

1. Which letters of the alphabet (upper or lower case) are not changed when viewed with a mirror?

2. What words are not changed when viewed with mirror?

3. Can you write a sentence that does not get changed when viewed with a mirror?

Here are some of the clever sentences students in 3K and 3M came up wtih.  Grab a mirror and try them out!

I lIKE to HIKE.

tHE tICK lIKED tHE CHICK.

KICK tHE toll BOOtH.

BOB lIKED tHE cool BIKE BooK.

Can you come up with other sentences?  Leave a comment and we will share them in class!

States of Matter

Today the 4th grade students learned about the 5 states of matter.  Yes, you read correctly, there are 5 states of matter: Bose-Einstein condensate, solid, liquid, gas and plasma.  In 2001, three scientists won the Nobel Prize in Physics for their actual discovery of the Bose-Einstein condensate.  S.N. Bose and Einstein had theorized about the possibility of this low energy state in the early 1920s.
